Description

P-nuclei are neutron‑deficient isotopes whose long‑sought‑after origin in the chemical enrichment of the Universe remains unknown. They are predicted to be produced on accreting neutron stars in X-ray binaries (XRBs), during stable burning and in thermonuclear (type I) X-ray bursts. Until now, it is not expected that these nuclei can leave the gravitational well of the neutron star. However, recent research has shown interactions between bursts and jets, perhaps giving p-nuclei an avenue of escape.

I will present a neural‑network‑based method I am developing to analyse optical data of nebulae surrounding XRBs to find evidence of material produced by the thermonuclear bursts.
